When looking to find the cause of a slow computer, it almost goes without saying the first thing to do is check for malware and then make sure there is no registry corruption present in the computer's operating system. However, what happens after a computer gets a clean bill of health as far as spyware and viruses are concerned and then it is determined the registry is corruption free but the computer is still operating at snail speed?
In this article, we will discuss a problem that was once a very difficult one to nail down. Since this problem was not causing serious trouble, it would often be left alone. As time went on it would cause the computer to become more and more listless. Your PC needs additional software so it can communicate with anything you connect to it; even a monitor needs this type of software. Because this software drives the hardware connected to the PC, we refer to these software packages as device drivers. Often common device drivers can be found on the CD the operating system was installed from, other times it will be on a separate CD that came with the hardware being installed.
Nonetheless, our PC needs interpreter software so it can deal with the hardware that is often a different brand than the PC and may even be newer than the PC.
Device drivers often cause problems because of the simple fact their early versions are many times unstable and need to be upgraded. If this is not done, due to the driver's inefficiency, the computer will lose speed and generally speaking, not work well.

Sometimes a driver will cause problems for no other reason than it is cheap. A cheap driver will often be included in a package with of a generic brand of hardware and even though the hardware itself is good the driver is not and this will cause troubles for the PC.
Not all drivers are duds from the get-go. There are times there is nothing at all wrong with a driver but after Microsoft does one of its surprise operating system updates, the driver will no longer be a perfect fit between the OS and the hardware.
The Point is Drivers Can Cause Problems
The bottom line is device drivers need attention in order to keep them at their best. Otherwise they may become a drag, or even worse on the computer.
There was a time when it was a tedious job to find a driver that was gumming up the works in a computer. Fortunately, there are now driver scanners that will find outdated and misfit drivers automatically and then upgrade them to better ones.
I believe a driver scanner, at least a good one, may end up being the most important computer tool to come along in a long time. I also believe every computer owner should have one installed on each one of his or her PCs. This tool, along with a spyware/virus cleaner and a registry cleaner have the ability to keep a computer operating efficiently and without slowing down for a long time to come!
